Which bay is overlooked by Rio de Janeiro and Sugarloaf Mountain?

The story behind the answer

Which bay is overlooked by Rio de Janeiro and Sugarloaf Mountain? The answer is Guanabara Bay.

Guanabara Bay is the broad natural harbor on Brazil’s Atlantic coast beside Rio de Janeiro. Sugarloaf Mountain rises at the bay’s entrance, while Rio’s urban shoreline wraps around much of its western side. The mountain’s Portuguese name, Pão de Açúcar, refers to the cone-shaped molds once used to transport refined sugar.

The bay has deep historical importance. Portuguese forces founded Rio de Janeiro near its entrance in 1565, using the area’s defensible position and natural harbor. The surrounding mountains also served as navigation and signaling landmarks. Today, the bay is associated with Rio’s skyline, beaches, ports, bridges and the dramatic viewpoints from Sugarloaf and Corcovado.

A common mix-up is Sepetiba Bay, another bay in Rio de Janeiro state, west of the city. Sepetiba is geographically separate; the famous bay directly overlooked by Rio and Sugarloaf is Guanabara Bay.
