Bay of Biscay
Answer
Bay of Biscay
Which bay is located on the west coast of France and north of Spain? The answer is the Bay of Biscay.
This broad inlet of the northeastern Atlantic Ocean curves along France’s western coastline and Spain’s northern coast. It extends from Point Penmarc’h in Brittany to the Spanish border, then westward along Spain toward Cape Ortegal in Galicia. Although commonly called a bay in English, it is geographically a large gulf.
The Bay of Biscay is known for powerful Atlantic weather, rough seas and deep waters. Its southern portion along northern Spain is sometimes called the Cantabrian Sea, while French usage includes the name Gulf of Gascony. The English name comes from Biscay, the coastal Spanish region associated with the Basque Country.
It is easy to confuse this feature with the Bay of Fundy, which lies between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, or the Bay of Bengal, which is in the northeastern Indian Ocean. The Bay of Biscay belongs to the Atlantic and separates western France from northern Spain.
