Which bay in Japan is the site of the port city of Yokohama?
Answer
Tokyo Bay
Answer
Tokyo Bay
The bay in Japan that is home to the port city of Yokohama is Tokyo Bay.
Tokyo Bay lies on the southern coast of Honshu, Japan’s main island, and is bordered by Tokyo, Kanagawa Prefecture, and Chiba Prefecture. Yokohama stands on the bay’s western shore, while Tokyo, Kawasaki, Chiba, and Yokosuka are also major ports around it. The bay opens to the Pacific Ocean through the Uraga Channel.
The area has long been central to Japan’s commerce and industry. Its shoreline became heavily industrialized during the 20th century, especially after World War II, when the Keihin and Keiyō industrial zones expanded. Reclamation projects also created new land for factories, roads, airports, and waterfront districts.
A common mix-up is Sagami Bay, which lies farther southwest along Kanagawa Prefecture’s Pacific coast. Tokyo Bay is also sometimes discussed narrowly as the inner bay, excluding the Uraga Channel, or broadly as including that channel.
