Which bay in Cuba was the site of a failed invasion in 1961? The answer is the Bay of Pigs.
The Bay of Pigs is an inlet of Cuba’s Gulf of Cazones on the island’s southern coast. It became internationally famous when Cuban exiles, organized and supported by the United States, landed there in April 1961 in an attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro’s revolutionary government.
The invasion began on April 17 with landings at Playa Girón and Playa Larga. The force, known as Brigade 2506, numbered more than 1,400 fighters. Without the full air support originally envisioned, the invasion was defeated by Cuban forces within three days, and the remaining invaders surrendered on April 20.
The failed operation strengthened Castro politically and pushed Cuba closer to the Soviet Union, helping set the stage for the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. The geographic bay is not the same as the historical event, although the invasion takes its name from the landing area. “Bay of Pigs” is also a translation of Bahía de Cochinos.
