Which battle in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is also called the Battle of the Pelennor Fields?

The story behind the answer

The battle fought on the Pelennor Fields in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

The battle takes place outside Minas Tirith during the War of the Ring. Sauron’s forces, led by the Witch-king of Angmar, attack Gondor’s capital, while defenders from Gondor and arriving allies struggle to hold the city.

The Rohirrim arrive unexpectedly after riding to Gondor’s aid. King Théoden leads them in a major charge, and Éowyn helps defeat the Witch-king with Merry’s assistance. Aragorn later arrives with forces from the southern fiefs and the Army of the Dead.

The Battle of Helm’s Deep occurs earlier and involves Rohan defending the Hornburg. The Battle of the Morannon takes place later at the Black Gate, serving as a diversion while Frodo and Sam approach Mount Doom.
