Which battle in 1514 gave the Ottomans control of eastern Anatolia?

The story behind the answer

The Battle of Chaldiran in 1514 gave the Ottomans a decisive victory that brought much of eastern Anatolia under their control. Fought on 23 August 1514, it pitted Sultan Selim I’s Ottoman army against Shah Ismail I and the Safavid Empire.

The conflict combined territorial rivalry with a deep Sunni–Shi’a political and religious confrontation. The Safavid shah had influence among Turkoman communities in eastern Anatolia, which Ottoman authorities viewed as a serious internal and frontier threat. Selim’s army was larger and made effective use of artillery and firearms, while the Safavid forces relied heavily on highly mobile cavalry.

The Ottoman victory halted Safavid expansion westward and forced Shah Ismail to retreat. Ottoman forces later entered Tabriz, the Safavid capital, although Selim could not hold the city permanently. The battle’s territorial consequences developed over decades: eastern Anatolia and parts of Upper Mesopotamia changed hands repeatedly before later treaties stabilized the frontier. Chaldiran is often confused with Mohács, the 1526 battle that destroyed Hungarian resistance, or Lepanto, the 1571 naval defeat of the Ottomans.
