Which battle in 1402 saw the Ottomans defeated by Timur?

The story behind the answer

The battle in 1402 in which the Ottomans were defeated by Timur was the Battle of Ankara.

Fought on 28 July 1402 near Ankara, the battle pitted the Timurid ruler Timur against Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I. Timur had built a powerful empire across Central Asia, Persia, and parts of the Middle East, bringing him into direct conflict with Bayezid’s expanding Ottoman state. Their rivalry intensified as both rulers demanded the submission of Anatolian Turkish principalities.

The Ottoman army was defeated on the Çubuk Plain. Several Anatolian beyliks and Tatar contingents that had been incorporated into Bayezid’s army defected to Timur during the fighting, weakening the Ottoman position. Bayezid was captured, an extraordinary humiliation for the empire’s ruler, and died in captivity the following year.

The defeat did not destroy the Ottoman state permanently, but it triggered the Ottoman Interregnum, a period of civil war among Bayezid’s sons from 1402 to 1413. Mehmed I eventually reunited the empire. The battle is sometimes called the Battle of Angora, an older European name for Ankara, which can cause confusion in historical references.
