Jason Newsted is the bassist credited on Metallica's 1991 album, commonly called The Black Album.
Newsted joined Metallica in 1986 after the death of the band's original bassist, Cliff Burton. The Black Album was his first Metallica studio album on which the bass was given a more audible and substantial role than on ...And Justice for All, although the songwriting credits remained primarily with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich.
Newsted contributed the main riff for “My Friend of Misery.” The song was initially conceived as an instrumental, continuing a pattern in which earlier Metallica albums had included instrumental tracks. It ultimately received lyrics and became the closing track on the standard album.
Robert Trujillo was not involved in The Black Album; he joined Metallica in 2003. Cliff Burton had died in 1986, and Ron McGovney had left the band years earlier. These different bassists are common points of confusion when identifying Metallica's line-up across decades.
