Which band released the 1977 debut album 'Marquee Moon'?

The story behind the answer

The band that released the 1977 debut album *Marquee Moon* was Television.

Television released *Marquee Moon* on February 8, 1977, through Elektra Records. The band was led by singer and guitarist Tom Verlaine, whose interplay with guitarist Richard Lloyd became one of the album’s defining musical features. Fred Smith played bass and Billy Ficca drums on the original recording.

The album grew out of New York’s early-1970s underground scene, especially the community around CBGB. Television rehearsed extensively before recording at A & R Recording in Manhattan in September 1976. Tom Verlaine and engineer Andy Johns produced the record.

Although often grouped with punk, *Marquee Moon* also draws on art rock, garage rock, jazz-like improvisation and extended guitar passages. Its title track is especially known for its long instrumental sections. The other options were important punk-era artists, but none released this particular debut album.
