Which band released the 1973 proto-punk album 'Raw Power'?
Answer
The Stooges
Answer
The Stooges
The Stooges released the 1973 proto-punk album *Raw Power*.
The record was issued on February 7, 1973, by Columbia Records and was credited to “Iggy and the Stooges.” It was the group’s third studio album, following *The Stooges* (1969) and *Fun House* (1970). Singer Iggy Pop and guitarist James Williamson wrote the songs, giving the album a sharper, more aggressive guitar sound than the band’s earlier groove-heavy work.
David Bowie was involved in the original album’s mixing, while Iggy Pop produced the recording sessions. The limited time available for the mix contributed to the famously rough, compressed sound of the original release. Later editions have used different mixes, including Iggy Pop’s controversial 1997 remix.
Listeners sometimes call the album an Iggy Pop solo record because of its credit and his dominant persona, but it is fundamentally a Stooges band album. Its songs “Search and Destroy,” “Gimme Danger,” and the title track became foundational touchstones for punk, hard rock, and later extreme guitar music.
