Eels performs “My Beloved Monster” on the soundtrack of the 2004 film Shrek 2.
The song appears during an early sequence after Shrek and Fiona return from their honeymoon. Its lyrics and relaxed alternative-rock sound suit the couple’s domestic life, while the film’s visuals show their unconventional happiness together in the swamp.
“My Beloved Monster” was originally recorded by the American band Eels and appeared on the group’s 1996 album Beautiful Freak. Shrek 2 uses the band’s recording rather than presenting it as an original song written specifically for the movie.
The soundtrack is often remembered for mixing established alternative-rock tracks with songs written or recorded for the film. That can lead to confusion with “Accidentally in Love,” performed by Counting Crows, or “Holding Out for a Hero,” sung by Jennifer Saunders as Fairy Godmother. Neither of those songs is the Eels track.
