Which band did John Lennon co-found?

John Lennon co-founded The Beatles. The group grew out of The Quarrymen, the skiffle band Lennon formed in Liverpool in 1956.

Lennon initially led The Quarrymen, and Paul McCartney joined after meeting him at a church fête in Woolton in July 1957. George Harrison joined soon afterward, and the evolving lineup eventually became The Beatles in 1960. Ringo Starr became the group’s permanent drummer in 1962.

Lennon was a co-lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist and principal songwriter in the band, sharing the famous Lennon–McCartney songwriting partnership with McCartney. Their work helped make The Beatles one of the most influential and commercially successful groups in popular music.

A frequent misconception is that Lennon founded The Beatles alone. He was central to the group’s origin, but The Beatles developed through several musicians, managers and name changes, including The Quarrymen, Johnny and the Moondogs, and The Silver Beatles.
