The song was Lennon’s first single from Double Fantasy and was released in October 1980, shortly before he was murdered in New York on 8 December. It had already reached No. 3 in the United States, but public attention after his death propelled it to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. In Britain, it climbed from No. 21 to No. 1 after the killing.

Lennon originally called the song “Starting Over.” The parenthetical phrase was added before release because Dolly Parton had recently had a country hit titled “Starting Over Again.” The recording features Tony Levin on bass, another reason he can be confused with the bassist on Live Peace in Toronto 1969.
