The concert took place on September 13, 1969, at the Toronto Rock and Roll Revival festival. Lennon and Ono joined the event at extremely short notice after promoter John Brower contacted Lennon about appearing. Lennon assembled the Plastic Ono Band with Eric Clapton on lead guitar, Klaus Voormann on bass, and Alan White on drums.

The group had little time to rehearse and reportedly practiced briefly without amplification on the flight from Britain. Their set included Beatles material such as “Yer Blues,” Lennon’s “Cold Turkey” and “Give Peace a Chance,” and Ono performances including “Don’t Worry Kyoko.” “Cold Turkey” received its first live performance at the festival.

The album was mixed soon afterward and released in December 1969. It was the first live album released by a Beatle, either individually or with the other Beatles.
