Which band did drummer Matt Sorum belong to before joining Guns N' Roses?

The story behind the answer

Which band did drummer Matt Sorum belong to before joining Guns N' Roses? He belonged to The Cult. Sorum joined the English rock band in 1989 and toured with them in support of Sonic Temple, their fourth studio album. During that period, Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash saw Sorum perform and later recommended him as a replacement for drummer Steven Adler.

Sorum joined Guns N' Roses in 1990 and remained with the band through much of its most ambitious era. He played on Use Your Illusion I, Use Your Illusion II, and The Spaghetti Incident?, as well as the extensive Use Your Illusion Tour. His powerful, precise style was a strong fit for the band's expanded arrangements and long concert performances.

The timeline can cause confusion because Sorum returned to The Cult after leaving Guns N' Roses. In 1999, he reunited with The Cult and played on their album Beyond Good and Evil before forming Velvet Revolver with Slash and Duff McKagan. Thus, The Cult was both his important pre-Guns N' Roses band and a later chapter in his career.
