Bauhaus appears in the 1983 movie The Hunger performing their classic song "Bela Lugosi's Dead."
The English gothic-rock band appears during the film's opening nightclub sequence, where singer Peter Murphy performs onscreen with the group. The scene helped make Bauhaus and the song closely associated with the emerging gothic subculture and with vampire cinema.
Released in 1979, "Bela Lugosi's Dead" was Bauhaus's debut single and was inspired by the actor Bela Lugosi, who became famous for playing Count Dracula in the 1931 film Dracula. The song's sparse bass line, echoing percussion, and unusually long arrangement established much of Bauhaus's dark musical identity.
A common mix-up is confusing the song's appearance in The Hunger with a conventional soundtrack placement. Bauhaus is actually shown performing it in the club scene, making the band part of the film's visual world as well as its music.
