Which balloon carried the first humans across the Pacific Ocean?
Answer
Double Eagle V
Answer
Double Eagle V
Double Eagle V carried the first humans across the Pacific Ocean by balloon.
Double Eagle V completed the first successful manned Pacific crossing in November 1981. The crew consisted of Ben Abruzzo, Larry Newman, Ron Clark, and Rocky Aoki. They launched from Nagashima, Japan, and landed near Mendocino, California, after traveling thousands of miles.
The craft was a hybrid balloon, using helium for lift and a heated-air section for additional control. It was therefore not a conventional sport hot-air balloon, but it is an important part of ballooning history because it demonstrated that a crew could cross the Pacific in a lighter-than-air craft.
Double Eagle V is often confused with Double Eagle II, which made the first successful nonstop Atlantic crossing by balloon in 1978. The Pacific achievement came three years later and involved a different crew and route.
