Which balloon achieved the first successful nonstop crossing of the Atlantic Ocean?

The story behind the answer

Double Eagle II achieved the first successful nonstop crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by balloon.

Ben Abruzzo, Maxie Anderson, and Larry Newman flew Double Eagle II from Presque Isle, Maine, to Miserey, France, in August 1978. They launched on 11 August and landed on 17 August, completing the journey after about 137 hours in the air.

The achievement ended a long series of failed attempts to cross the Atlantic by balloon. The craft was a gas balloon filled with helium, not a conventional hot-air balloon, but it became one of the defining milestones in the broader history of balloon flight.

Double Eagle II is often mixed up with Breitling Orbiter 3, which later completed the first nonstop circumnavigation. It is also distinct from Virgin Atlantic Flyer, which crossed the Pacific in 1991.
