Balenciaga’s City bag, also known as the Motorcycle bag, debuted in 2001.
The design became associated with Nicolas Ghesquière’s period as Balenciaga’s creative director. Its soft, slouchy construction, prominent seams, rounded handles, and distinctive studded details gave it a more relaxed appearance than a rigid top-handle handbag.
The name can cause confusion because retailers and fashion writers have used both “City” and “Motorcycle” for closely related versions of the design. “City bag” is the standard model name, while “Motorcycle bag” describes its visual connection with biker styling.
This is separate from Balenciaga’s Hourglass bag, which has a sharper curved silhouette and a more structured profile. It is also distinct from the brand’s Neo Classic line, another later style that uses motorcycle-inspired detailing.
