Which bakery makes the MoonPie snack cake?

The story behind the answer

Chattanooga Bakery makes the MoonPie snack cake. The Chattanooga, Tennessee, company introduced the product in 1917, combining two round graham crackers with a marshmallow center and a flavored coating.

The company says the idea came from a traveling salesman who asked a Kentucky coal miner what kind of snack he wanted. The miner reportedly requested graham crackers and marshmallow, with the name inspired by a wish for a snack as large as the moon. That origin story is widely repeated, though it is partly company folklore.

MoonPies became especially associated with the American South and are traditionally paired with RC Cola. The standard MoonPie is about four inches wide; the brand also sells Minis and Double-Decker versions with an extra cookie and marshmallow layer.

A common mix-up is confusing MoonPie with a generic pie or candy bar. Its defining structure is the sandwich of graham cookies and marshmallow. Chattanooga Bakery remains the maker, while McKee Foods is the company behind Little Debbie snack products, not MoonPie.
