Which award did Mahatma Gandhi never receive despite being nominated for it five times?

The story behind the answer

Mahatma Gandhi never received the Nobel Peace Prize, despite being nominated for it five times.

Gandhi was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1937, 1938, 1939, 1947, and 1948. He was never selected as the laureate. His final nomination came shortly before his assassination in January 1948, and the prize was not awarded that year because the committee concluded that there was no suitable living candidate.

The Nobel committee later acknowledged Gandhi’s importance. In 1989, committee chair Egil Aarvik said that Gandhi’s absence from the list of laureates was a historical omission. Gandhi is therefore often discussed in connection with the prize even though he never held it.

This fact is sometimes misstated as meaning that Gandhi won a posthumous Nobel Prize. The Nobel statutes generally do not permit awards to deceased people, except when a laureate dies after the announcement. Gandhi’s name is also associated with India’s Gandhi Peace Prize, created by the Government of India in 1995, but that is a separate award.
