Which award did C.S. Lewis’s novel The Last Battle win in 1957?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s novel The Last Battle won the Carnegie Medal in 1957.

The Last Battle is the seventh and final published volume of The Chronicles of Narnia. It appeared in 1956 and depicts the destruction of Narnia, bringing the series' central conflict to its conclusion. The book received the Carnegie Medal for outstanding children's literature in 1957.

The Carnegie Medal is awarded by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in the United Kingdom. It is named after Scottish-American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and is one of Britain's major prizes for children's books.

Readers sometimes confuse this award with the Newbery Medal, which honors children's literature in the United States. The Last Battle was recognized by Britain's Carnegie Medal, not the American Newbery. Lewis's Narnia series also includes The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, published six years earlier.
