Which automaker briefly joined the $1 trillion market-cap club in October 2021?

The story behind the answer

Tesla briefly joined the $1 trillion market-cap club in October 2021.

Tesla’s share price rose above the level required for a valuation of $1 trillion after the company announced a major vehicle order from Hertz. The milestone made Tesla one of the very few companies ever to reach that market capitalization.

Investors valued Tesla not only as an automaker but also for its electric-vehicle technology, battery systems, charging network, and potential software revenue. This broader growth story helped give Tesla a much higher valuation than traditional automakers with similar vehicle sales.

Tesla’s market capitalization later moved above and below $1 trillion as its share price changed. Market value is not the same as production volume, revenue, or profit. The company was founded in 2003 and was initially known as Tesla Motors before adopting its current name.
