Tesla became the first automaker to exceed a $1 trillion market capitalization in October 2021.
Tesla passed the milestone on October 25, 2021, after its share price rose sharply following news of a major vehicle order from Hertz. The move made Tesla the first car manufacturer to receive a stock-market valuation above $1 trillion.
The milestone reflected investor expectations about Tesla’s electric-vehicle growth, battery technology, software, and potential expansion of charging and energy businesses. It did not mean Tesla had the highest annual vehicle production or revenue among automakers.
Tesla’s valuation was much larger than those of established manufacturers such as Toyota, Volkswagen, and Ford at the time. Market capitalization can change every trading day, so the ranking was a snapshot rather than a permanent measure of industrial size.
