Which author shared the 1966 Nobel Prize in Literature with Nelly Sachs?

The story behind the answer

Shmuel Yosef Agnon shared the 1966 Nobel Prize in Literature with Nelly Sachs.

Agnon was an Israeli Hebrew-language writer whose fiction drew on Jewish tradition, Eastern European life, biblical language, and the experience of modernity. The Swedish Academy praised the characteristic narrative art of his work, which contains motifs from Jewish life.

Nelly Sachs, the other 1966 laureate, was a German-language poet and playwright whose writing confronted persecution, exile, and the Holocaust. The two laureates represented different languages and literary forms, but both were closely connected to Jewish historical experience.

Agnon was born Shmuel Czaczkes in Galicia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He later settled in Mandatory Palestine and adopted the surname Agnon from one of his early stories. He remains the only Nobel literature laureate whose primary language was modern Hebrew.
