Leonhard Stock won the men’s downhill gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.
Stock was a surprise champion: he had not been Austria’s leading downhill selection before the Games, but he produced the fastest run on the challenging Whiteface Mountain course. He finished ahead of Canada’s Ken Read, while Switzerland’s Peter Müller took bronze.
The Lake Placid downhill was held at Whiteface Mountain, whose steep terrain and difficult conditions made it a demanding test of speed and control. Stock’s Olympic victory became the defining result of his career, although he later won World Cup races and a world championship super-G title.
Stock is sometimes confused with Franz Klammer, Austria’s celebrated 1976 Olympic downhill champion. Klammer did not win the Lake Placid race; Stock took that title four years later.
