Which Austrian sculptor gave his name to a Brutalist concrete church in Vienna?

The story behind the answer

The Austrian sculptor whose name is attached to Vienna’s Brutalist concrete church is Fritz Wotruba.

Wotruba Church, formally the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, stands in Mauer, a district in Vienna. Its striking design consists of more than 150 irregular concrete blocks arranged in a dramatic, sculptural composition. The blocks create a deliberately unstable-looking silhouette while forming a functioning church interior.

Wotruba developed the concept with the architect Fritz Gerhard Mayr. He worked on the project until his death in 1975, but did not see the building completed; the church was finished in 1976. Its popular name reflects Wotruba’s central artistic role rather than a traditional dedication to him.

Wotruba was one of Austria’s major twentieth-century sculptors. His work moved increasingly toward geometric abstraction, often using the cube as a basic form. A common mix-up is to choose Hundertwasser, another famous Viennese artist, but Hundertwasser was known primarily for vividly coloured, organic architecture—not this severe concrete church.
