Which Austrian exchange was founded in Vienna in 1771 by Empress Maria Theresa?
Answer
Vienna Stock Exchange
Answer
Vienna Stock Exchange
The Vienna Stock Exchange was founded in 1771 in Vienna by Empress Maria Theresa.
Maria Theresa established the exchange during the Habsburg monarchy to support more orderly trading in government bonds and other securities. It was one of the earliest organized stock exchanges in Europe and initially served mainly public-finance needs.
The exchange later expanded into equities and other instruments. Today it is commonly called Wiener Börse and is operated by Wiener Börse AG. Its leading share index is the ATX, which tracks major companies listed in Vienna.
Vienna Stock Exchange is distinct from the Vienna MTF and other trading systems that may provide access to securities. Its long history also predates modern electronic markets by more than two centuries, showing how European exchanges evolved from government-debt trading into diversified capital markets.
