Which Australian state is home to Melbourne Park?
Answer
Victoria
Answer
Victoria
Melbourne Park is in the Australian state of Victoria. The complex sits in Melbourne’s Sports and Entertainment Precinct, close to the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Yarra River.
The venue has hosted the Australian Open since 1988, when the tournament moved from the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club to a larger complex then known as Flinders Park. The site was later renamed Melbourne Park, and its facilities were designed to handle the tournament’s growing international crowds.
Melbourne Park is more than a collection of tennis courts. Its principal arenas include Rod Laver Arena, John Cain Arena and Margaret Court Arena, all of which have retractable roofs. The complex also hosts concerts, basketball, netball and other major events throughout the year.
A common mix-up is confusing the state with the city: Melbourne is the city, while Victoria is the state. Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide have hosted earlier editions of the Australian Open, but the tournament has been based in Melbourne every year since 1972.
