Ester Ledecka became the first athlete to win Olympic gold medals in two different sports at one Winter Olympics in 2018.
At Pyeongchang, Ledecka won the women’s super-G in alpine skiing and the women’s parallel giant slalom in snowboarding. Her super-G victory was particularly unexpected because she started with a high bib number and defeated a field containing established alpine specialists.
Ledecka’s achievement was historic because the two events belong to separate Olympic sports: skiing and snowboarding. She had already won major snowboarding titles before Pyeongchang, but her alpine-skiing gold established her as a dual-discipline champion.
She became the first person to win two gold medals in different sports at the same Winter Olympics. The feat is sometimes mistakenly attributed to athletes who competed in several disciplines, but Ledecka was the first to win gold in both.
