Which Assassin's Creed protagonist is the master assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad?

Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad is the master assassin who stars as Assassin's Creed's first main historical protagonist.

Altaïr is a Syrian Assassin active during the Third Crusade, chiefly in the late twelfth century. At the beginning of the first game, his reckless behavior causes him to lose his rank and equipment. His mentor, Al Mualim, assigns him a series of targets in the Levant.

The game’s principal cities include Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus. Altaïr’s missions gradually reveal that the conflict involves the Templars and a powerful artifact called the Apple of Eden. His story emphasizes discipline, investigation, and the gradual revision of his understanding of the Assassin Creed.

Altaïr also appears in later franchise material, including Assassin's Creed: Revelations, which explores his later life. He is distinct from Ezio Auditore, the Renaissance-era hero who became the series’ next major protagonist.
