Which Assassin's Creed protagonist is a pirate who becomes an Assassin in the Caribbean?

The story behind the answer

Edward Kenway is the pirate who becomes an Assassin in the Caribbean story of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Edward begins as a privateer and pirate seeking wealth and status rather than serving the Assassin Brotherhood. After taking the identity of the Assassin Duncan Walpole, he becomes entangled in the conflict between Assassins and Templars. His adventures eventually lead him to understand the consequences of pursuing profit without a larger purpose.

Edward is the father of Haytham Kenway and the grandfather of Ratonhnhaké:ton, also known as Connor, linking Black Flag to Assassin's Creed III. Adéwalé is Edward's quartermaster and later becomes an Assassin, but he is not the game's central pirate protagonist. Black Flag's Caribbean setting includes Nassau, Havana, Kingston, and numerous islands, while the historical background draws on real Golden Age pirates such as Blackbeard and Calico Jack.
