Which Assassin’s Creed game was the first to let players choose between a male and female protagonist?

The story behind the answer

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was the first game in the series to let players choose between a male and female protagonist.

Released in 2018, Odyssey offers Alexios and Kassandra as selectable versions of the central character, known as the Eagle Bearer. The player’s choice affects which sibling appears in the protagonist role, while the other becomes an important character in the story.

The game is set in Ancient Greece during the Peloponnesian War, beginning in 431 BCE. It uses an open-world structure with naval travel, dialogue choices, branching quests, and role-playing systems that distinguish it from earlier entries.

This feature is sometimes confused with Syndicate, which has two fixed playable protagonists, Jacob and Evie Frye. Valhalla also provides a gender choice for Eivor, but it was released after Odyssey. Odyssey was the earlier entry to present male and female protagonist options at the start.
