Which Assassin's Creed game was the first to feature a protagonist who is a Viking raider?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed Valhalla was the first game in the series to feature a Viking raider as its protagonist.

Released in 2020, Valhalla follows Eivor, a Viking raider who leaves Norway with their clan and helps establish a settlement in ninth-century England. The story moves between Norway and England and includes conflicts involving Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, rival leaders, and the Hidden Ones.

Eivor can be played as male or female, and the game allows players to choose how Eivor is presented. The character is not the historical Viking leader Ragnar Lothbrok, although Ragnar's legendary circle and the broader Viking Age influence the setting.

Earlier Assassin's Creed games visited other periods and cultures. Origins centers on Ptolemaic Egypt, Odyssey on ancient Greece, and Rogue on the eighteenth-century Atlantic world. Valhalla is specifically the entry that makes a Viking raider central to the player's story, while retaining the series' conflict between the Assassins' predecessors and the Templars' predecessors.
