Assassin's Creed Syndicate was the first main-series game to feature a playable female lead.

Syndicate lets players control Evie Frye, who shares the campaign with her twin brother Jacob Frye. Evie is a fully playable protagonist with her own missions, abilities, and story focus. The campaign alternates between the twins as they fight the Templars and build an Assassin presence in Victorian London.

Earlier releases had already featured playable women in important Assassin's Creed experiences. Aveline de Grandpré stars in Assassin's Creed III: Liberation, but Liberation was originally a separate PlayStation Vita title rather than a numbered main-series console release. Syndicate is therefore commonly identified as the first main-series entry with a playable female lead.

Later games expanded player choice further. Odyssey allows a choice between Kassandra and Alexios, and Valhalla centers on Eivor, who can be represented with different gender options. Those later systems do not change Syndicate's place in the series' mainline history.
