Which Assassin's Creed game was the first to feature a playable female lead as one of two selectable protagonists?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed Syndicate was the first main Assassin's Creed game to feature a playable female lead as one of two selectable protagonists.

Released in 2015, Syndicate follows twins Jacob Frye and Evie Frye in Victorian London. Players can switch between them during much of the campaign, while some missions are assigned specifically to one twin.

Evie is a trained Assassin focused on stopping Templar schemes and locating powerful artifacts, while Jacob builds influence among London's criminal groups. Their contrasting approaches are an important part of the game's structure.

Earlier titles had playable female characters, including Aveline de Grandpré in Assassin's Creed Liberation, but Liberation was a separate spin-off rather than a main numbered-style entry. Syndicate brought this dual-lead format to the primary series.
