Liberation stars Aveline de Grandpré, a French-African Assassin active in eighteenth-century New Orleans and Louisiana. The game was originally released for the PlayStation Vita in 2012 alongside Assassin’s Creed III, and a remastered version later reached other platforms.

Aveline’s story takes place during the period of French and Spanish influence in Louisiana. Her missions involve the Assassin Brotherhood, Templar activity, colonial politics, and the lives of enslaved people in the region. The game also gives Aveline different personas, each suited to different social situations and gameplay options.

Later entries expanded female playable roles. Syndicate features Evie Frye alongside Jacob, and Odyssey allows the player to choose Kassandra or Alexios. Those games do not change Liberation’s place as the first title built around one female lead.
