Which Assassin's Creed game was the first in the series to feature a fully explorable Ancient Egyptian setting?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed Origins was the first Assassin's Creed game to feature a fully explorable Ancient Egyptian setting.

Released in 2017, Origins follows Bayek of Siwa, a Medjay who becomes involved in the origins of the Hidden Ones, the organization that later develops into the Assassin Brotherhood. Its map covers a large interpretation of Ptolemaic Egypt, including deserts, settlements, temples, tombs, and major cities such as Alexandria and Memphis.

The game marked a major shift toward action role-playing systems. It introduced extensive gear levels, loot, ability trees, dialogue choices, and a large open world designed for free exploration. It also features historical figures including Cleopatra VII, Julius Caesar, and Ptolemy XIII, while placing fictional characters and the Order of the Ancients alongside them.

Odyssey followed in 2018 with ancient Greece, but it was not the first ancient-world open-world entry. Assassin's Creed II and Revelations focus on Renaissance settings, not Egypt. Origins' title reflects its story about the beginnings of the Assassin tradition rather than the founding of the modern organization in a literal historical sense.
