Which Assassin's Creed game was the first in the series to feature a female protagonist, Aveline de Grandpré?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed III: Liberation was the first series game to feature a female protagonist, Aveline de Grandpré.

Liberation follows Aveline, a Louisiana-born Assassin of French and African heritage, during the eighteenth century. Her story is set mainly in New Orleans and the surrounding region, where she confronts Templars and navigates the colonial society of French Louisiana.

The game was originally released for PlayStation Vita in 2012 alongside Assassin's Creed III. It was later ported and remastered for other platforms, making Aveline's adventure available to a wider audience.

Later games also center women, including Evie Frye in Syndicate and Kassandra in Odyssey. Those characters are sometimes cited as the first female leads because their games had larger releases or prominent marketing, but Aveline appeared earlier as the protagonist of Liberation.
