Which Assassin’s Creed game is the first to feature a fully controllable ship as a major exploration system?

The story behind the answer

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is the first Assassin’s Creed game to feature a fully controllable ship as a major exploration system.

Black Flag builds its open world around Edward Kenway’s ship, the Jackdaw. Players can sail between Caribbean islands, board enemy vessels, gather resources, upgrade the ship, and engage in large naval battles. The ship is not merely a transport option; it is one of the game’s principal progression systems.

Assassin’s Creed III introduced naval missions and ship controls before Black Flag, but those sequences were more limited and tied to specific missions. Black Flag expanded the concept into a central, persistent activity that shaped exploration and combat across the whole campaign.

Later games developed the idea further. Assassin’s Creed Rogue added extensive naval gameplay in the North Atlantic, while Odyssey used ship exploration in the Aegean Sea. Black Flag remains the series’ defining pirate and naval adventure.
