Which Assassin’s Creed game introduced the setting of ancient Egypt and the protagonist Bayek of Siwa?

The story behind the answer

Assassin’s Creed Origins introduced ancient Egypt and the protagonist Bayek of Siwa.

Released in 2017, Origins follows Bayek, a Medjay from the Siwa Oasis, during the first century BCE. The story takes place during the final years of the Ptolemaic Kingdom, when Cleopatra and Ptolemy XIII are involved in a struggle for power. Bayek’s personal quest gradually connects to the formation of the Hidden Ones, the organization that becomes the Assassin Brotherhood.

Origins marked a major change in the series’ design. It added role-playing systems, character levels, loot, extensive exploration, and a large open world covering deserts, cities, and the Nile Valley. Combat also shifted toward a hitbox-based system rather than the more counter-focused style of earlier games.

The game’s Egyptian setting distinguishes it from Odyssey’s ancient Greece and Valhalla’s Viking-era England and Norway. Bayek is also not the protagonist of either of those later titles.
