Which Assassin’s Creed game introduced the playable character Edward Kenway?

The story behind the answer

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag introduced the playable character Edward Kenway.

Edward is a Welsh privateer who becomes involved with both the Assassins and Templars during the Golden Age of Piracy. The game is set primarily in the Caribbean in the early eighteenth century, with major locations including Havana, Nassau, and Kingston. Edward commands the ship Jackdaw, making naval exploration and combat central features.

Edward is the father of Haytham Kenway and the grandfather of Ratonhnhaké:ton, also known as Connor, who appears in Assassin’s Creed III. This family connection links Black Flag to the Kenway storyline established by the earlier game.

Although Black Flag is a pirate adventure, Edward begins as someone pursuing wealth and freedom rather than as a committed Assassin. His gradual change in priorities forms the central character arc. Assassin’s Creed Rogue also features maritime gameplay, but it stars Shay Cormac instead.
