Edward is a Welsh privateer who becomes involved with the Assassin-Templar conflict while pursuing wealth and reputation in the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy. His story takes him through Nassau, Havana, Kingston, and many islands and coastal regions.

Black Flag expanded the naval gameplay that had been introduced in Assassin's Creed III. Players command Edward's ship, the Jackdaw, explore the Caribbean, attack other vessels, and search for buried treasure.
