Which Assassin's Creed game introduced the multiplayer mode with templar agents and wanted targets?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood introduced the series' competitive multiplayer mode with templar agents and wanted targets.

Brotherhood's multiplayer launched alongside the 2010 game and placed players in the roles of Abstergo-trained Templar agents. Each participant received a target to identify and pursue while also trying to avoid an opponent who had been assigned to hunt them.

The mode emphasized stealth, blending, disguise, timing, and cautious movement rather than simply defeating every character in sight. Players earned points for varied assassinations and for escaping or stunning pursuers. Playable personas included characters such as the Doctor, the Courtesan, and the Harlequin.

Assassin's Creed II included no comparable competitive multiplayer mode. Later games expanded the feature with additional maps, characters, and rules, but Brotherhood was the first franchise entry to introduce it. The mode is separate from the game's single-player story of Ezio and the Borgia-controlled Rome.
