Which Assassin's Creed game introduced the Animus's genetic-memory exploration of ancient Greece?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed Odyssey introduced the series' exploration of ancient Greece through genetic memories.

Released in 2018, Odyssey is set during the Peloponnesian War in the fifth century BCE. Players choose either Kassandra or Alexios as the protagonist, and the chosen character becomes a mercenary descended from the Spartan king Leonidas I.

The game expands the role-playing structure introduced by Assassin's Creed Origins. It includes dialogue choices, branching quests, multiple endings, equipment rarity, and a large naval exploration system. The player can travel through regions controlled by Athens or Sparta and participate in battles between the two powers.

Odyssey is sometimes confused with Origins, which explores Ptolemaic Egypt, or Valhalla, which depicts Viking-era England and Norway. Although Odyssey predates the historical Assassin Brotherhood, its story connects to the franchise through the Isu, the Templars' predecessors, and the modern-day Animus narrative.
