Which Assassin's Creed game introduced multiplayer assassination modes?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood introduced multiplayer assassination modes to the Assassin's Creed series.

Released in 2010, Brotherhood added competitive multiplayer alongside its single-player campaign. Players took the roles of Templars using disguises, blending, stealth, and carefully timed attacks to hunt other participants. The main mode assigned players targets while also making them targets themselves.

The multiplayer design adapted the single-player series' social-stealth systems into competitive matches. Recognising a target, avoiding detection, and using the crowd became more important than simply moving quickly or fighting openly. Several maps were based on locations from the game's Renaissance setting.

Brotherhood is sometimes mistaken for Assassin's Creed Revelations because Revelations expanded the multiplayer component. Brotherhood, however, was the first main series entry to include this competitive feature. Its single-player story continues Ezio Auditore's campaign in Rome and focuses on rebuilding the Assassin Brotherhood.
