Which Assassin's Creed game introduced ancient Egypt as its main historical setting?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed Origins introduced ancient Egypt as its main historical setting.

Released in 2017, Origins takes place primarily in Ptolemaic Egypt and follows Bayek of Siwa. Its map includes the Siwa Oasis, Alexandria, Memphis, the Nile, and other locations shaped by Egyptian geography and history. The game explores the early development of the Hidden Ones, the organization that becomes the Assassin Brotherhood.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is mainly set in ancient Greece, while Assassin's Creed Valhalla focuses on ninth-century Norway and England. Assassin's Creed II is set largely in Renaissance Italy. These games may share themes and historical exploration, but they do not use ancient Egypt as their principal setting.

Origins also marked a major mechanical shift for the series. It introduced stronger role-playing elements, loot, character levels, and a more combat-focused system. Its title refers to the narrative origins of the Assassin tradition, not to the first game released in the overall franchise.
