Which Assassin’s Creed game first introduced the playable character Layla Hassan?

The story behind the answer

Assassin’s Creed Origins first introduced the playable character Layla Hassan.

Layla is an Abstergo Industries researcher who becomes the modern-day viewpoint character in Origins. After rejecting parts of Abstergo’s approach, she uses a modified Animus to experience the memories of Bayek of Siwa and Aya. Her research reveals information that changes her relationship with both Abstergo and the Assassin Brotherhood.

Origins alternates between Bayek’s ancient-Egyptian story and Layla’s modern investigation. Layla later returns as a major modern-day character in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. This makes her one of the few modern protagonists to continue across several consecutive mainline games.

Layla is sometimes confused with Desmond Miles, the central modern protagonist of the earlier games. Desmond appears from the original Assassin’s Creed through Assassin’s Creed III, while Layla’s arc begins much later. Origins was released in 2017 and marked a major shift toward open-world role-playing systems and ancient historical settings.
