Which Assassin’s Creed game features the pirate Edward Kenway as its main character?

The story behind the answer

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag features the pirate Edward Kenway as its main character.

Released in 2013, Black Flag follows Edward Kenway across the Caribbean during the early eighteenth century. He begins as a privateer, turns to piracy, and becomes entangled in the conflict between the Assassins and Templars while pursuing wealth and influence.

The game is a prequel to Assassin’s Creed III in the Kenway family chronology. Edward is Connor’s grandfather and Haytham’s father, but neither of those characters is the lead of Black Flag. This family connection is a frequent source of confusion when identifying the game’s protagonist.

Black Flag combines land-based stealth with large-scale naval gameplay. Players can upgrade Edward’s ship, the Jackdaw, explore ports and islands, and encounter historical pirates such as Blackbeard and Bartholomew Roberts. Its strong emphasis on sailing made it one of the franchise’s most distinctive entries.
