Which ASICS sneaker is known for its split-tongue construction?

The story behind the answer

The ASICS Gel-Lyte III is known for its split-tongue construction.

ASICS released the Gel-Lyte III in 1990, with Shigeyuki Mitsui credited as its designer. Its tongue is divided down the middle, allowing the two sides to wrap around the foot and reducing the need for a separate tongue that can slide from side to side.

The model also used GEL cushioning, part of ASICS’s long-running approach to impact absorption. Its combination of technical running features and an unusual profile later made it a popular base for collaborations and lifestyle releases.

The split tongue is the easiest way to distinguish the Gel-Lyte III from many other ASICS runners. The Gel-Kayano and Gel-Nimbus are different model families, even though they also use ASICS GEL branding.
